SAM-e synthesis is a naturally occurring reaction within the livers and brains of dogs. While in the liver, it aids in the critical function of cleaning out the build-up of unwanted waste and may help repair cell damage. In the brain, SAM-e helps increase dopamine function, stimulates healthy cognitive function and works as an antioxidant.
Additionally, researchers have identified SAM-e as an effective anti-inflammatory that improves joint health. This means that pets that are already on maxxiSAMe, receive valuable joint support for minor everyday discomfort. However, if your dog has pre-existing joint problems and/or arthritis, they will still benefit from an additional joint supplement like maxxiflex+.
Our SAM-e formulation is specifically designed to protect the vulnerable SAMe nutrient from decreasing in potency.
Our fiber base protects against the acidity levels in dog’s stomach and allows for quick absorption into the intestinal track.
Our base also contains defatted flax, sunflower, and sesame seed fiber with naturally occurring immune and hormone boosting functions.
In addition to the intestinal support provided by the fiber, there are also the antioxidants provided by lignans, a group of chemical compounds found in plants that support immune systems and may help regulate hormone levels.
We carefully formulated maxxiSAMe to provide serious support for ill or aging pets.
There are predictable deficiencies in nutrients that can further impact the overall health of the dog. Not only do our supporting ingredients in maxxiSAMe target liver health and cognitive function, but they also work throughout the body to prime it for the efficient processing of SAM-e.
maxxiSAMe has no artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, or binders.
To learn more about these hardworking supporting ingredients, including artichoke, B vitamins and lignans, and how they help your dog, go to the ingredients section below.
Learning the health of the dog you love is ailing is difficult. Liver issues often take a noticeable tole on the overall health and behavior of your pet.
Whether your dog is suffering from a chronic liver disease, a breed-specific liver ailment, or toxicities developed from the long-term use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDS) or acetaminophen (Tylenol). maxxiSAMe can serve as an effective part of the care plan developed by your veterinarian.
S-adenosylmethionine (SAM-e), one of the active ingredients in maxxiSAMe, is proven to help prevent the build-up of unwanted materials in the liver so it functions efficiently. SAM-e supplementation helps protects the liver from further damage and may also help with cell repair.
As pets age, they too can be impacted by cognitive degeneration.
Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS) is the result of age-related changes in the brain and can appear as confusion, memory loss and other symptoms of reduced mental function.
Unfortunately, cognitive dysfunction is incurable but early diagnosis and intervention can slow it down and improve your dogs’ quality of life.
Working as an antioxidant, SAM-e helps increase dopamine function in the brain and is a safe and effective way to stall mental decline in aging pets.
As pets grow older, they can face many of the same age-related health conditions as humans. Our unique stabilized SAM-e powder boosts liver and cognitive functions while easing joint discomfort and improves mood at the same time. While maxxiSAMe is hard at work within your beloved pet’s liver and brain, expect marked improvements in attitude, energy, and the behavior of your dog.
SAM-e is a compound that is made naturally in the body and plays an important role in normal bodily function. The full name is S-adenosylmethionine but it is commonly referred to as SAM-e or SAMe.
SAM-e is formed from the essential amino acid methionine and adenosine triphosphate and is found in every living cell in the body. SAM-e, as it is within the cell, is the body’s most important antioxidant but antioxidants are chemicals (natural and manmade) that can prevent or slow down cell damage.
There are no food sources of SAM-e but it can be given as a supplement. SAM-e has been used as human dietary supplement since 1999 in the US and for longer in many countries in Europe.
SAM-e is used to treat various conditions in humans, e.g. depression, anxiety, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), lower back pain, tendonitis, liver disease, dementia, and to slow down the aging progress.
“A sufficient number of clinical trials have supported the use of SAMe in disorders including depression, dementia, vacuolar myelopathy, and liver disease. Further studies should be performed, and it is of primary importance that the safety and tolerability of SAMe be assured. Reviews of clinical studies to date indicate that SAMe has a low incidence of side effects with an excellent record of tolerability” (The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)
In recent years, SAM-e has been used for pets as well, and then mainly as liver supplement for dogs and cats. However, as with humans SAM-e can benefit pets in more ways.
maxxiSAMe is especially formulated by maxxipaws to address two common health issues in our pets, i.e. liver and brain (cognitive function) health.
How is Best to Administer maxxiSAMe?
One of the great benefits of maxxiSAMe is that it can be given with food (unlike coated tablets that must be given on empty stomach).
The easiest way to administer maxxiSAMe is therefore to mix it in with your dog’s food. For maximum results, it is recommended to divide the daily dosage between two servings.
maxxiSAMe does not contain any artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, or binders, so it has natural flavor. The taste is mild (little sweet) to us humans and vast majority of pets happily eat their food when maxxiSAMe has been added to it.
However, if you experience any problems, please contact us and we will be happy to help.
Guaranteed Quality Ingredients & Manufacturing
We never compromise on quality. maxxiSAMe is manufactured in USA, in GMP and NASC (National Animal Supplement Council) certified manufacturing facility.
All the ingredients used in maxxiSAMe are of pharmaceutical human grade quality. maxxiSAMe does not contain any artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, or binders.
That’s not all… we guarantee that the stated ingredients are present in the product at the date of manufacturing
SAM-e is not only good for liver and brain health. SAM-e is an effective anti-inflammatory. Multiple clinical trials involving thousands of people have shown SAM-e to improve joint health and help with the symptoms of osteoarthritis (Arthritis Foundation).
maxxiSAMe does not replace the need for dog joint supplements like maxxiflex+ for dogs with existing joint problems and arthritis. However, it provides valuable joint support to pets that require SAM-e supplementation.
SAM-e powder formula has many benefits over coated SAM-e tablets:
Easier Administration
Most dog owners have been there, trying to get their pet to eat coated tablets. Most dogs hate them so you either have to hide the tablet in a treat (and hope your clever pet will not manage to outsmart you and just eat the treat) or manually force it down your dogs throats, which let’s face it, no dog owner enjoys doing and definitely not on a daily basis.
Coated tablets must be given on empty stomach because of the high acidity level in our dogs’ stomach. This is to shield the tablet so it can make it to the intestine to be absorbed. As we have explained, the stabilized powder used in maxxiSAMe protects the SAM-e in the stomach and ensures it makes it to the intestine where it is absorbed.
With powder, you can simple mix it in with your dog’s food. This is because maxxiSAMe, unlike coated tablets, can be given with food.
Quicker Absorption
The fiber base used in maxxiSAMe powder makes absorption quicker and maximizes the availability of all of the ingredients in the intestinal tract.
What’s more, including B vitamins in the formula increases the effectiveness of maxxiSAMe as it helps with the absorption of the SAM-e.
Maximized Results
It is recommended to divide the daily SAM-e dosage between two servings for maximum results, i.e. to maximize the absorption of all ingredients. This is another thing you cannot do with coated SAM-e tablets.
Coated tablets are sensitive to moisture and extreme heat and can therefore not be split or crumbled.
Accurate Dosage
Powder allows the pet owner to administer the exact dosage for pet of any size. maxxiSAMe is one product that fits dogs of all sizes, as well as cats.
This also makes it easier to increase or decrease the dosage if needed at the recommendation of your veterinarian.
To develop effective premium quality SAM-e formula suitable for both dogs and cats
To effectively support canine and feline liver health and cognitive function
To make SAM-e formula for pets that is easy to administer
To make SAM-e formula that is suitable for pets of any size, i.e. one size fits all
We are proud to say that we achieved all our goals with maxxiSAMe advanced SAM-e formula for pets.
In its native form, SAM-e is labile (easily broken down) and degrades rapidly. SAM-e therefore has to be formulated in a way that protects it from the enzymes in the stomach.
The stomach acid in dogs and cats is lower than in humans but lower pH means higher acidity. Normal human pH is 1.5 – 3.5 on an empty stomach, pH 5 when it is full. While the pH in dogs and cats is between 1 and 2, or significantly more acid.
The SAM-e used in maxxiSAMe is patented stabilized powdered form of SAM-e. This protects the SAM-e from interaction with environmental factors, as well as from the other ingredients used in the formulation and guarantees the availability of the active substance (SAM-e) when taken orally.
What’s more, this protects the SAM-e in the stomach and ensures it makes it to the intestine where it is absorbed.
maxxiSAMe does not only contain SAM-e. It contains additional ingredients for extra potency. These ingredients (see details below) are specifically chosen as they also support good liver health and cognitive function in aging pets.
maxxiSAMe also contains all the necessary Vitamins B recommended for dogs with hepatobiliary diseases. This means you don’t have to buy or administer them separately.
B vitamins also support the body’s absorption of SAM-e.
The liver produces SAM-e from the amino acid methionine. It is converted into glutathione which plays an important role in protecting the liver cells (hepatocytes) from damage from the waste products that the liver removes from the blood stream.
When the liver is damaged, then less SAM-e, and thus less glutathione, is produced. This means even more liver cells become damaged, i.e. vicious cycle has started.
SAM-e has been shown to increase the glutathione levels in dogs and cats.
SAM-e supplementation has been shown to be safe and effective way to stall or improve mental decline in aging pets.
SAM-e helps increase dopamine function in the brain, stimulates brain function and works as an antioxidant.
maxxiSAMe contains Cynara Scolymus, a.k.a. artichoke. It is a member of the milk thistle family and better known under its common name Globe Artichoke.
The artichoke’s main plant contains a long list of constituents, including cynarin (the main constituent), silymarin and caffeic acid that have all been shown to be effective for liver health.
maxxiSAMe contains artichoke leaf extract 4:1 concentrate (which means that 4 kgs of starting material will result in 1 kg of extracted material when the starting material is extracted with a solvent).
This is concentrated plant material, not standardized extract. Meaning it contains a whole host of constituents, not just one.
So while Globe Artichoke contains silymarin it is just one of the constituent. Other ingredients, especially cynarin and caffeic acid are as important as silymarin for liver health.
“Artichoke protects liver from poisonous effects of toxins in a manner similar to silymarin from milk thistle. It is able to prevent liver damage from the same wide range of poisons as milk thistle. Artichoke extract is also able to stimulate the regeneration of liver cells in much the same manner as does silymarin” (Rain-Tree).
One study found artichoke extract to demonstrate a significant antioxidant effect capable of protecting liver cells from damage. In addition, the artichoke extract hindered liver cancer in human liver cells. Another study found that artichoke leaf extract decreased fat and cholesterol levels in the liver (Liver Support).
Artichoke stimulates the production of bile in the liver as well as the discharge of bile from the system. These two functions are very important to the liver’s well-being. As a natural diuretic and choleretic, artichokes stimulate bile production, improves gallbladder function and aid in a more efficient breakdown of foods for overall improved digestion (Underground Health Reporter).
Choline is an essential micronutrient. It is vital for healthy liver function and normal brain development.
This is why maxxiSAMe contains choline bitartrate (40% choline cation).
Choline deficiency causes muscle damage and abnormal deposition of fat in the liver, which results in a condition called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Choline is therefore used for liver disease, including chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis.
Choline is also used for various human mental conditions, like depression, memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, Huntington’s chorea, Tourette’s disease, a brain disorder called cerebellar ataxia, certain types of seizures, and schizophrenia.
Dogs can also develop degenerative brain diseases, known as canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome (sometimes also called canine dementia).
Animal studies have shown that choline is essential for optimal brain development and influences cognitive function in later life (Oregon State University).
Inositol (sometimes called Vitamin B8) is one of the B complex vitamins (though not officially recognized as vitamin as it can be synthesized in the body from glucose).
Inositol is present in all body tissue but with the highest concentration in the brain, heart and eye lens.
maxxiSAMe contains various B vitamins. All of the B Vitamins are essential for the liver to perform its multitude of metabolic functions.
Supplementation with B vitamins is generally recommended for dogs with hepatobiliary diseases (the hepatobiliary system refers to the liver, gall bladder and bile ducts, and how they work together to make bile).
maxxiSAMe contains the necessary vitamins B so you don’t have to buy or administer them separately. B vitamins also help with the absorption of SAM-e.
B vitamins help the body to convert food (carbohydrates) into fuel (glucose), which is used to produce energy. These B vitamins, often referred to as B complex vitamins, also help the body to use fats and protein.
B complex vitamins are needed for healthy skin, hair, eyes, and liver. They also help the nervous system to function properly.
Vitamin B5 (5 mg)
Vitamin B5 (D-Pantothenic Acid) is critical for the manufacturing of red blood cells.
It is also important in maintaining a healthy digestive tract and helps the body use other vitamins (not least Riboflavin).
Vitamin B1 (4 mg)
As well as supporting liver health and brain function, Thiamine (vitamin B1) may strengthen the immune system and improve the body’s ability to withstand stressful conditions (being disorientated and confused is without a doubt very stressful for our dogs).
Vitamin B2 (4 mg)
Riboflavin (vitamin B2) works as an antioxidant by fighting damaging particles in the body known as free radicals. B2 is also needed to help the body change vitamin B6 into form it can use and is important for body growth and red blood cell production.
Vitamin B6 (4 mg)
Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine Hydrochloride) helps the body to make several neurotransmitters, i.e. chemicals that carry signals from one nerve cell to another. It is therefore needed for normal brain development and function, and helps the body to make the hormones serotonin and norepinephrine, which influence mood, and melatonin, which helps regulate the body clock.
The body also needs Vitamin B6 in order to absorb vitamin B12 and to make red blood cells and cells of the immune system.
Vitamin B12 (5 mcg)
Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin) is an especially important vitamin for maintaining healthy nerve cells, and it helps in the production of DNA and RNA, the body’s genetic material.
What’s more, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin B9 (folic acid) work together to produce S-adenosylmethionine (SAM-e), a compound involved in immune function and mood.
The base in maxxiSAMe is not just a filling, it has its own health benefits for dogs. The base is therefore one of the ingredients in maxxiSAMe.
The base contains defatted flax, sunflower, and sesame seed fibre. This is a concentrated form of fiber supplying nearly double the lignan content from what is in whole flaxmeal.
Fiber for dogs
Fibre is important to cleanse the intestinal tract. It scrubs away debris and creates environment that allows the good bacteria to flourish (as fibre is the only food source for good bacteria, i.e. prebiotics). Without the flourishing good bacteria, the immune system and nutrient absorption suffers.
This means that maxxiSAMe can work faster than products that contain only actives. Actives that go into a sluggish inflamed intestinal tract can simply pass on by without being utilized.
We always recommend starting slowly with any new supplement and gradually increase the amount given. This allows your dog to get used to the new ingredients, both the taste and texture, and helps to minimize the risk of any potential stomach upset.
The recommended maintenance dosage is shown on the back of the label. If you are using maxxiSAMe to treat a specific health condition, then you may want to increase the dosage while getting the condition under control. The recommended saturation dosage is double the maintenance amount.
You can reduce the dosage to maintenance dosage once the condition has improved. This is one of the many benefits of powder formulation. It is easy to adjust the dosage in line with your dogs need over time.
One scoop (included) is 2.5 gram and equates to 1 teaspoon (baking measure teaspoon).
It is recommended dividing the daily dosage between two servings as this maximizes the absorption of all the ingredients.
If you only feed your dog once a day, then you may want to introduce daily treat time with maxxiSAMe for the second serving, e.g. by making pate ball filled with maxxiSAMe.
Yes you can give maxxiSAMe with food.
This is because the SAM-e used in maxxiSAMe is a patented stabilized powdered form of SAM-e. This protects the SAM-e from interaction with environmental factors, as well as from the other ingredients used in the formulation.
This also protects the SAM-e in the stomach and ensures it makes it to the intestine where it is absorbed, i.e. it guarantees the availability of the active substance (SAM-e) when taken orally.
This is also why maxxiSAMe can be given with food, unlike coated SAM-e pills which must be taken on an empty stomach an hour before or after mealtimes.
As maxxiSAMe is powder you need to administer the dosage amount yourself and you may be concerned about getting the dosage exactly right. Especially those with small dogs as some may find it tricky to measure smaller amounts.
You don’t need to be overly concerned about this. SAM-e is a natural ingredient that is safe in higher dosages than we recommend. If you give your dog maxxiSAMe twice a day as recommended, then a little bit more or less per serving will ensure you meet the daily requirements over time.
The easiest way to administer maxxiSAMe is to mix it in with your dog’s food. maxxiSAMe has a natural flavour as it does not contain any artificial flavours, colours, preservatives, or binders. The vast majority of dogs happily eat their food when maxxiSAMe has been added to it.
Others may prefer daily SAM-e treat. There are a number of ways of doing this. By adding a small amount of water, you can make a “paste”. Some dogs happily accept it just like that. For others it works better to mix it with something the dog enjoys, like peanut butter, pate or a small piece of chicken or ham. Or you can make a small “ball” (like dry kibble) and put it in his food bowl and put some liquid omega oil on top (as most dogs love the taste of fatty acids).
If your dog is not accepting maxxiSAMe for some reason, please contact us directly and we will offer you some additional tips and support. If we cannot together get your dog to happily accepts his new supplement we will fully refund you.
Because no matter how effective maxxiSAMe is, it will not work if the dog is not taking it. Fortunetly, when we have had the opportunity to work with the owners we have in most cases been successful in getting the dogs to accept their supplements. Which is exactly what we both want. For your dog to feel better with the help of our products.

maxxiSAMe is available for both dogs and cats. It is exactly the same product; it is just the label and the size of the container and the scoop that are different. The larger size is maxxiSAMe for dogs and contains 150 g (5.3 oz). While the smaller size is maxxiSAMe for cats and contains 90 g (3.2 oz).
However, there is no reason why cat owners cannot buy the larger container for their cat, or cats. While owners of small dogs may prefer to buy the cat version for the little friend.
