Because it's all about the ingredients...

What is Glucosamine?e)

Glucosamine is a chemical compound that is produced naturally in the body. It’s found in the fluid around the joints and is important building block for cartilage. It helps cartilage to act as a shock absorber.

Glucosamine comes in different forms, most commonly as glucosamine hydrochloride (HCL / HCl), glucosamine sulfate, and n-acetyl-glucosamine. The first two forms are most commonly used as canine glucosamine but glucosamine HCL is the highest quality, purest form of glucosamine.

maxxiflex+ contains high strength human grade glucosamine hydrochloride (HCL) for maximum effect.

Benefits Dogs

The cartilage acts as a shock absorber (cushion) for the joints, i.e. provides smooth surface between the bones to eliminate painful bone-on-bone contact. Over time, normal wear and tear can erode the cartilage, causing joint pain and inflammation.

Dogs with arthritis (estimated around 20% of dogs) suffer most as the cartilage can degrade to the point that the bones come into contact with each other. This is very painful and can seriously limit the dog’s movements.

Glucosamine is the key building block for making cartilage and taking glucosamine supplement may help to supply the materials needed to rebuild the cartilage.

Other benefits of glucosamine include anti-inflammatory effects, as it may prevent swelling and inflammation in the joints (common in dogs with arthritis).

Studies

“Glucosamine hydrochloride (HCl) and glucosamine sulfate both work equally well in the cat and dog. The sulfate form was originally used in Europe. The HCl form has recently become more popular because it is purer and provides more available glucosamine per unit weight and contains much less residual ash” (MedicAnimal)

The Source of Glucosamine for Dogs
There aren’t any natural food sources of glucosamine. Glucosamine supplements are derived from chitin, substance found in the shells of shrimps, lobsters, and crabs. It can also be made in a laboratory.

The glucosamine in maxxiflex+ comes from vegetarian source.

What is Chondroitin?

Chondroitin sulfate is the major glycosaminoglycan (group of compounds) found in cartilage. Chondroitin attracts fluid inside the joints, helping to ensure adequate shock absorption and nourishment of the tissues that line the joint.

Glucosamine and chondroitin for dogs are frequently used together as they are considered to improve each substance’s beneficial effects. maxxiflex+ contains high strength human grade chondroitin sulfate combined with glucosamine HCL.

Benefits Dogs

Like glucosamine, chondroitin for dogs may inhibit the production of inflammatory mediators that are destructive to the joint.

The body’s chondroitin production decreases with age. Joint supplement for dogs with chondroitin are therefore considered especially helpful for older dogs with arthritis.

Studies

“Chondroitin sulfate may actually help the body to repair damaged cartilage and help restore joint integrity. It may also protect existing cartilage from premature breakdown as well as keep cartilage tissue hydrated and assist in cushioning impact stress” (petMD)

What is Hydrolyzed Collagen?

Collagen is the main structural component of connective tissue (cartilage, ligaments, tendons, bones, skin). It helps the connective tissue to withstand great force without breaking down or tearing. Collagen is the most abundant protein in mammals (25-30%) but the body’s ability to produce and maintain collagen progressively declines after we reach adulthood.

Hydrolyzed collagen is a modified form of collagen that is easier for the body to digest and absorb. It is composed of small amino acids and helps to form new collagen in the body.

Benefits for Dogs

There are various claims about the health benefits of hydrolyzed collagen.

What matters for dogs joint health is its potential ability to protect (and even increase) lean muscle mass and to help improve the symptoms of arthritis.

Studies

There are number of human clinical studies available confirming that hydrolyzed collagen can be beneficial for joint health. For example this study that concludes that “hydrolyzed collagen has a positive therapeutic effect on osteoporosis and osteoarthritis with a potential increase in bone mineral density, a protective effect on articular cartilage, and especially in the symptomatic relief of pain” (Scielo).
As well as this one showing that there “was a significant improvement in knee joint comfort as assessed by visual analogue scales to assess pain and the Womac pain subscale” (Taylor & Francis Online ).As well as this one showing that there “was a significant improvement in knee joint comfort as assessed by visual analogue scales to assess pain and the Womac pain subscale” (Taylor & Francis Online).

What is MSM?

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a naturally occurring sulfur (sulphur) compound found in the body.

MSM is the source of sulfur in the body but sulfur is essential chemical needed for the synthesis of cartilage.

MSM is found in variety of foods, like meat, fish, eggs, milk and to a lesser amount in fruits and vegetables. Some MSM is lost during storage and food preparation and the amount of MSM decreases with age, meaning supplementing MSM may be required.

Benefits for Dogs

The cartilage in dogs with arthritis has about one third of the concentration of sulfur when compared to healthy cartilage.

MSM is therefore highly beneficial for arthritic dogs as it provides sulfur used by the cartilage in the healing process. It may have anti-inflammatory benefits as well.

Studies

Laboratory studies on humans have found that “MSM has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Sulphur, which is a major component of MSM, plays an important role in making collagen and glucosamine, both of which are vital for healthy bones and joints, and in the production of immunoglobulins, which help your immune system”(Arthritis Research UK)

What are Fructooligosaccharides?

Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are made up of plant sugars (fructose) that are linked together in chains.

FOS is found naturally in asparagus, onions, banana, wheat, garlic, soybeans, artichoke, tomatoes and other fruits, vegetables and grains. It can also be manufactured in laboratories.

Benefits for dogs

Fructooligosaccharides are best known for stimulating beneficial flora growth in the digestive tract, i.e. acting as a prebiotic.

Studies

Studies have shown that FOS is also ideal for maintaining mineral density and bone strength. It increases mineral content in the bones and supports joint health, i.e. through better absorption of calcium, magnesium, and iron.

What is Bio Active Whey?

Whey protein is a mix of globular proteins that are isolated from whey (the liquid by-product of cheese production).

Benefits for dogs

Bio Active Whey protein supports joint health by balancing immune and gut function.

Studies

Some preclinical studies in rodents have suggested that whey protein may possess anti-inflammatory properties as well (Wikipedia).

What is Devil’s Claw?

Devil’s claw is herb, native to southern Africa. It contains iridoid glycosides, components that are believed to have strong anti-inflammatory effects.

Benefits for dogs

Devil’s claw has a very long history of use as an anti-inflammatory and modern research has confirmed its effectiveness. Actually few joint supplement ingredients have been shown to be as effective as devil’s claw.

Today, devil’s claw is widely used to fight inflammation or relieve pain in arthritis in both humans and animals.

Studies

Devil’s claw has repeatedly shown to be statistically significant in reducing pain experienced by people with osteoarthritis. Most animal studies also support the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of devil’s claw extracts.

Recent scientific article found that results of couple of high-quality trials suggest that devil’s claw is effective in the reduction of osteoarthritis-related symptom (Arthritis Research UK)

Phellodendron Tree Extract

Phellodendron is a plant which bark has been used in medicine to treat various health problems, including osteoarthritis.

Benefits for Dogs

Some chemicals in phellodendron may reduce redness and swelling (inflammation).

Studies

There is available study that shows that Phellodendron combined with Citrus sinensis peel had beneficial effects on symptoms of osteoarthritis of the knee as measured using LAI scores and had anti-inflammatory effects as measured using CRP.

What are Cetylated Fatty Acids?

Cetylated fatty acids (CFA) are a group of naturally occurring fats that support joint and connective tissue health.

Benefits for Dogs

Cetylated fatty acids may help lubricate joints and muscles, soften tissues, and increase flexibility. It may also help the immune system and reduce inflammation and swelling.

Studies

The exact ways that CFAs work in treating musculoskeletal conditions hasn’t been formally studied. It’s been proposed that they may have a lubricant effect on joints (Arthritis Research UK)

What is DL Phenylalanine?

Phenylalanine is an amino acid, a “building block” of protein.

There are three forms of phenylalanine: L-phenylalanine (the natural form found in proteins), D-phenylalanine (a mirror image of L-phenylalanine that is made in a laboratory), and DL-phenylalanine (a 50/50 combination of the other two forms).

Benefits for Dogs

Phenylalanine has long been used to treat various health problems, including chronic pain, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Studies

There are insufficient evidences for its efficiency, but it’s considered worth including as it may help with chronic pain.

What is Bromelain?

Bromelain is an enzyme that occurs naturally in pineapple. As a supplement, it’s mainly used to ease pain and swelling.

Benefits for Dogs

Bromelain is thought to be useful for a variety of conditions. It has been shown to be anti-inflammatory and been used to treat inflammatory conditions like arthritis in dogs.

Bromelain seems to cause the body to produce substances that fight pain and swelling (inflammation).

Studies

“In recent years, a number of clinical studies have appeared to substantiate one of the traditional therapeutic uses of extracts of bromelain, namely, in the treatment of inflammatory disorders of the musculoskeletal system”(NCBI)

What is Calcium Ascorbate?

Calcium Ascorbate is a compound made up of ascorbic acid also known as vitamin C and calcium. Calcium Ascorbate is commonly used as an antioxidant, preservative, and source of vitamin C.

Benefits for Dogs

Calcium supports long-term bone health and vitamin C boosts the immune system.

Taking vitamin C on its own can however deplete the calcium stores in the body, making calcium ascorbate more suitable ingredient in dog joint supplement.

Studies

Vitamin C can be helpful in the treatment of different forms of arthritis. It has been shown to improve pain due to gout arthritis because vitamin C reduces the serum level of uric acid.

Other studies show that the ability of vitamin C to reduce the risk of gout and joint pain due to this form of arthritis increases with increasing doses of the vitamin.

Vitamin C can also reduce other kinds of joint pain not associated with arthritis (Progressive Health).

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Sodium hyaluronate, also known as hyaluronic acid, is a natural substance found in the body with the highest concentrations in the fluids in the eyes and joints.

Benefits for Dogs

Hyaluronic acid works by acting as a cushion (shock absorber) and lubricant in the joints and other tissues.

It gives elasticity to joints, is important for tissue hydration, lubrication and proper cellular function.

Studies

The efficacy of oral hyaluronic acid in relieving knee pain has been demonstrated in several clinical trials (NCBI).

What is Super Oxide Dismutase?

Super oxide dismutase (SOD) is an enzyme found in all living cells. An enzyme is a substance that speeds up certain chemical reactions in the body.

Benefits for Dogs

Super oxide dismutase is an enzyme that helps break down potentially harmful oxygen molecules in cells. This may prevent damage to tissues.

SOD has powerful anti-inflammatory activity. It has been used for the treatment of soft tissue inflammation in horses and dogs, human inflammatory diseases, and chronic bladder inflammations.

Studies

Studies indicate that reduction in SOD is associated with the earliest stages of osteoarthritis.

What is Turmeric?

Turmeric is a plant. It may be best known as the main spice in curry but the root of turmeric is also commonly used to make medicine.

Benefits for Dogs

Whole turmeric possesses anti-inflammatory properties. Much of this observed activity seems to be due to the presence of curcumin, which also acts as a powerful antioxidant.

In animal models, curcurmin has been found to have anti-inflammatory effects in arthritic pets comparable to the NSAID drug Phenylbutazone (The Natural Health Bible for Dogs & Cats by Dr. Shawn Messonnier DVM).

Studies

Turmeric extract has very powerful antioxidant effects. The chemicals in turmeric may decrease swelling (inflammation).

Some research has shown that taking turmeric extracts can reduce the pain caused by osteoarthritis of the knee. In one study, turmeric worked about as well as Ibuprofen for reducing pain (WebMD).
